GH2 external monitor (HDMI out) only allows 16:9 photos

I've noticed with my GH2 when I plug in an external monitor via the HDMI cable, the only aspect ratio the camera allows is 16:9. Is there anyway around this? I'd rather shoot 3:2.

Fun with R lenses on the OMD

Well, my novoflex adapter arrived today, so I've been fiddling. Here's a thread to play on!

The EVF seems to allow decent focusing, and with the grip the camera handles really well.

This is what it looks like with the Leica R 180 elmarit APO and the grip

Taken with the Leica MM and the 75 F2 (well, it would be, wouldn't it!).

The IS is a real bonus - here is a shot taken with the combo - hand held and manual focused:

so 180mm (360 equiv) ISO 5000, 1/100th

this is 1/320th at ISO 200

all at f2.8

Lens Hood for Olympus 12-50

The hood for this lens is the same as that used for the 9-18. So if you have that one, you can double up. If you don't have it the cheapest I saw it was at RainbowImaging. They have impossibly fast service and free shipping over $10 (although the hood is slightly less - so buy something else).

Fits perfectly, quality seems good. Box shows JJC which is what you see on ebay.

Kenko Tokina is releasing their new 300mm F6.3 mirror lens for micro four thirds on May 25th.

Are you planning to buy one? How do you think it compares with the Olympus 75-300 and Panasonic 100-300 lens?

Buying a portrait lens

In my DSLR days I had a fast 85mm lens for doing portraits whilst I was interviewing people.

I've yet to get one for my m 4/3 gear. My 20mm is too wide. My medium (kit) zoom is too slow. I am currenlty using a GH2.

As I see it in the UK there are three alternatives:-

The 25mm f1.4 at around 440 UKP. Fast but a bit wide.

The 45mm f2.8 at around 500 UKP. The initial thought.

Then I spotted the Olly 45mm f1.8 which is only about 230 UKP.

Suddenly there was only one alternative. The Olly.

Has anyone owned the Panny and the Olly 45mm and found a noticeable difference to warrant the price variance?

The Zoom Conundrum

Okay - we all like shooting primes - the results are notably better, and the more 'useful' the zoom, the more compromises it has.

Still, there are those moments.

I was out today with the 14-150 Zuiko - which is a good(ish) and very 'useful' zoom.

This is a fairly decent shot I took with it:

it's a little soft at the corners, but not silly bad, and the detail and micro contrast in the middle is really pretty good.

. . . . . but it would have been better with the 25. . . . and then . . round the corner:

I got a few shots in quick succession . . . and then . . . oops. . . busted

Then they were gone.

I've never seen fox cubs playing in the wild before, and if I'd had the 25mm on the camera then I would have missed it.

Panasonic L1 Viewfinder Display Not Working

The viewfinder LCD display on my Panasonic DMC-L1 seems to have stopped working. The focus confirmation red dot does work and so does the rear LCD. Otherwise camera seems to function fine.

Did a search, someone on Flickr said Panasonic charges $511 to repair, which is way more than the body's market value.

Anyone with any ideas/fixes/suggestions? Thanks in advance!

To Jono:

Do you have a setup for simple folk for the OM-D? I use your setup on the NEX exclusively. I notice on the NEX-7, though unless you use AUTO ISO and P, turning the dial jumps the ISO and shutter speed by a full stop�I would love half or third stops, if possible.

I have found the OM-D harder to set up than the GXR or the NEX-7, so would appreciate hearing what others have done (while I plough through DPR's 'simplification' of the setup suggestions!).

I did find out how to turn off the dedicated video button, and the face detection (though I can see how that might come in very handing shooting my speedy young nephew). TIA, Kit

40-150 Worth Purchasing?

I have the OM-D on order with the 12-50. One of the deals they are running is to add the 40-150 for only $149 instead of the normal $249.

Is it worth it? Would I be better putting the money toward another alternative? Anyone with any experience with this lens?

I already plan to add the 45 1.8.
