    No, I was a strict analog Hassie user - dabbled around a bit with MF digital, but could never afford a high MP back. The D700 was the first DSLR we became enamoured with - a wonderful camera - many fond memories. The D800 was wonderful for portraits.

    Enjoy your "new" combo - and be prepared to be amazed at how small zoom lenses once were - and the standard filter size was 52mm!

    If you want something really small and light, you can try the old Nikkor 35-105mm AF-D, which IMHO was a stunner on the D700. See: https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35-105mm-afd.htm

    Nikon just announced the Nikkor 28-400mm f4-8 zoom . Not normally in the market for such a beast, but this time it looks like it could be pretty decent - see diverse reviews on YouTube .... could be persuaded that it's ideal for going walks with the pooch ;)

    D500 - closest in Z body?

    As Duff suggested - you'll be better off with new Canon body and adapter. There currently is no mirrorless counterpart for the D500.
