The Olympus 12-40 is supposed to be as good as the gold standard Zuiko 14-35, although the latter is f2. I'll be testing my Zuiko against Tessar 24-70/4 when I get it. -

Sony 28-70/3.5-5.6 MTF is attached. It does not look much worse than that of Tessar FE 24-70/4 but the units are not directly comparable. Here Sony chose 10lp/mm and 30lp/mm while for the Tessar they (Zeiss?) use 10, 20 and 40 lp/mm. An extrapolation points to the conclusion that the new glass... -

Wide UltraPrimes vs Summiluxes-A7r tests
I finished off my testing of primes on A7r with Zeiss UltraPrimes (cine lenses) 32mm/t1.9 and 24mm/t1.9 against Leica Summiluxes 35/f1.4 and 24/f1.4. The Ultraprimes are built for the S35 cinematography gate/sensor which is similar to APS-C in size. Before, I found out that the 85mm UP covers... -

MTF charts do not lie--when they are measured and not computed. Zeiss gives measured MTF data (who knows about Zeiss designs made by Sony...). MTF figures are for lens only, without any camera body/sensor involved. -

It is not really clear how the 'perceptual mpix' metric is constructed. I would think that D800E delivers 5-10% more resolution in terms of line pairs/mm. Then most of the D800 'loss' can be made up with sharpening. -

At f1.4 the Otus has better corner MTFs. At f8 the FE is near....perfect. Only some astigmatism at 40lp/mm, but all contrasts above 80%! And 10lp/mm and 20lp/mm contrasts near 100% with astigmatism-free flat overlapping lines.How did they do it? Those are the characteristics of a 15,000$... -

Between 5% and 10% better on D800e. DxO figures are a simplification. MTF curves tell us that the FE at f1.4 is actually in the center BETTER (!!) than the Otus, especially at 40lp/mm. Otherwise it seems to be a draw at f1.4 (cursory look at MTF's...). The other graph is f4 for the Otus and... -

Aren't those methods good for landscape shooting mostly? I have little need for good corners in a human photo story shot with 35mm. Here I'd prefer a good wide-open, central to 2/3s, performance--where my subjects are. Or portraits. Good drawing, capability for natural softening, bokeh... -

When I was looking for a 35mm lens for my D800 I thought it'd be nice to see most of that resolution. According to dxomark.com Sigma 35/1.4 is the sharpest lens of the three (Nikon 35/1.4, Zeiss 35/1.4) and of all current FF 35mm lenses. It also scores highest overall and costs much less. For... -

I agree 100%. Even though I bracket focussed manually, there are other factors that make proper lens testing seriously difficult. Even with Imatest.
