Re: Technical Camera Images

One of the big advantages of the IQ180 is that the large pixel count let you make fairly aggressive perspective adjustments in post without turning the stretched portions of the image into mush. Here's the 180 + Alpa TC + HR 32mm handheld:

Nice Milt! I was beginning to think I was the only one around who has the 100HR.

I used to live in the Bay Area, and have a few old slides from that view. Was that during the holidays? I seem to remember the buildings would be lit up like that to look like boxes of presents. Or do they do that all the time now?

Ciao,
Dave

Yes it was Dave. Right after thanksgiving after a rainstorm. The 100mm HR really is a sharp, crisp lens. No movements allowed but nice resolution. I'm considering selling my SK lenses and moving solely to Rodenstock.

Spring is here, and my new toy arrived.
First shoot about town with the 28mm Rodenstock HR Digeron-S with the IQ180.
Despite the specs, I was able to add 5mm rise as well as about 1.25 degree of tilt.
It was very breezy and although I waited for relative calm, I can see some motion blur in the flowers. This was shot with my back against the road

What is special about wide-angles?

Why not shoot (from the far side of the road) with a longer lens and get the church to take up more of the frame and get fewer daffodils the foreground?

Strange choice that 28mm for an IQ180. The 32mm is more flexible, wider if shifted and in the same price level. Is it because you don't shift that you took this narrow image circle lens ? (Sorry to ask but I'm curious !)

I was sorely tempted by the 32, but already own a 40 70, and 120 and thought the step to 28 was a reasonable gap and would give me a focal length that is about as wide as I ever use in a single frame without a stitch
If I were to do this over again I might have picked the 32, a Schneider 60, but then the look of the schneiders and rodies are fairly different.
On the wide end of things I much prefer the Rodie retrofocals with the lower lens cast and angle of incidence issues, so I decided to stay in the rodie family.

The 32 would have given a stitch about as wide as a 23, and more rise/fall than the 28, but I get lots of that from the 40.

So it ended up being more about lens spacing actually.
If I were more of an architectural shooter I would have favored the 32 a little more heavily.

It was an agonizing decision and I am not completely convinced it was the right one, and may not be the right one for you, but decide I did.

I prefer the more horizontal version since you have horizontal motion. Also the colors are more pleasing.

I think the last one would look lovely rotated 180 degrees, but then I'm a sucker for ambiguous landscapes.

Matt, funny because I've got a print sitting on the table rotated as you suggest. I've been staring at it like that for the last few days. I think I like it better too.

Ed, just curious, is it a color cast in the sky or is it natural ? It looks like quite a strong cast.

It's actually more of an exposure trick than anything. The sky lit up magenta as it was snowing as the sun rose. I purposely blended an overexposed sky to make the gray clouds look white and reduced contrast In the sky substantially to make it look more like daylight. I've sat on the image for three or four years but decided it was interesting enough to post.

That said, I can't remember if I used an LCC but the edges don't look dark and color is in the middle rather than edges.

Rob,
Very nice! I wonder how those textures would come out in b&w...? Especially with the sudden change from greens to browns in the left vs. right side.

Re: Technical Camera Images

It snowed last week (one of the few times this year; very mild winter). The leaves have started to come out, and I liked the soft colors from the early leaves vs. the snow.

This was also my first attempt at a pseudo-HDR image. I tried the LCC trick posted on Capture Integration's website. Not sure how I feel about it yet. The trees have somewhat of a glowing halo in a small image like this. I tried a 17x22 print and the 'glow' is much less noticeable in print.

Alpa STC, IQ180, SK 150, ~ 10mm rise (back fall actually).

Dave, you're welcome to have a go with the jpg! I think though that a good part of the interest in this image lies in the juxtaposition of colours - the warm sand and sandstone against the vivid green sea-lettuce.
