Fun with MF images

recognize the water color (it is that color!)? well not quite. the srgb sort of ruins it (maybe mneed to play with the profile)

After my 9 Step Program for Gearholics I need to confess. I bought Dave Kipper's Aptus 75S. These are all shot with the Contax 645, Zeiss 140mm. First two wide open f/2.8, third f/11. First time out with this kit. All were shot in Malibu. Coming from 4x5 where I strive to have everything in sharp focus this is a departure for me. Anyone know what these purple weeds are called?

It sure does. But my color is off here. Been having major system issues . Right now in the middle of completely reinstalling my Mac Pro from scratch. What a PITA. LOL
But at least i can get back to normal

Also impressed by the level detail visible in the ASU SD uniforms - stitching, the polyester -pile', etc - and of the poor SOB wearing the suit in Az in the Spring.

Have to say the detail is really something in these files. This really is a jump up. If you want to get in MF at a reasonable price than the ZD is the entry point. The lenses are not expensive at all unless you get some specialized ones but even the standard 80 mm is sharp as a tack. So the reality is even full price for the ZD is 10k than 2 or 3 k on lenses and that is retail on all of it. So 13k tops and you have a great kit. Now the new body is coming so i will most likely sell the Mamiya AFD-II with 80 and get the new III body and that new 80 lens and that is 5k which is still great and still have all my glass and when i am ready to move up to a better back than that is all i will need to do is buy that. But not in a real rush to do that either the ZD is nice but slow. I would get to get something that ISO 400 or 800 would be very good on noise. I could use this more often on jobs if i can get that down the road but yes i am impressed very much so far. AWB is not so hot though on the ZD part

Now I realize that last actual pixels crop actually isn't very good. I just got Leaf Capture 11 running. This is a small actual pixels crop and WITHOUT any Photoshopping at all; everything done in LC11.

This is just crazy !

Graham, that looks like a half dozen reasons why it was a tough shoot. I can't imagine how you kept the dress from getting completely soaked. Fun job, though, I'd bet.

Want to see how the Aptus 75S resolves? A screen grab of an image in Leaf Capture 11. Look at the green box then it's 100% view in the LLC. It's just a snapshot but very telling. And I never would have considered shooting in 2pm light like this with film.

(for those not familiar ... there is a trend in wedding photography where the bride allows shots that can damage her dress once it has served its purpose.)

Yes, the Kodak back cropped a fair amount. But at the sizes I print wedding images at, that's no problem. The Zeiss 350/4 helped a lot also : -)

Great shots guys! In particular, I really like the first horse shot Graham -- excellent lighting. Here is an older one which I am sure some of you have seen, but I figured I would throw it in here.
Camera: Hasselblad 500c/m, Lens 80mm f/2.8 CT* (1970s), A12 back with Acros.



Here's a crop...it would be sharper but it was at f/22:

By the way, that crop is directly above the head of the figure at left.
Or this: Camera: 203FE, 110/2 FE, E12 back. The thing that impresses me most about the 203FE is the exposure -- it is just spot on all the time. Shooting slide film with it is so easy compared to other cameras...other than the M7, which also does it. I think they both have similar metering areas...

Gotta agree with you about the 203FE Stuart. One of the best in-camera TTL meters I've ever encountered. Since you started with the film thing ... might as well ...

A couple from a series about small town America, and the "simulated" small town feel that I've doing over time ... all on film, mostly with the 203FE .../ in this case with the 50/2.8FE.

they are really great, when the processing is right. The main advantage, other than 30x40 prints! is that there is virtially no sharpening since the screen or print resolution includes all four colors; that is, often even though the file has interpolation what you see has really sgarp edges natuarally. It was the first thing I noticed with 8x10 and smaller.

I could live with that Aptus back
