Southern Oregon Coast Workshop, October 21st - 24th

Note: ONE space remaining!

Hi All!

Our venue for fall 2009 will be the Southern coastal area of Oregon. Dates will be Wednesday October 21st beginning at Noon, through Saturday October 24th ending at Noon. We will be staying the first two nights in the town of Bandon Beach, Oregon. We will shoot several nice locations nearby including the dunes just North of Bandon Beach, the town itself, and the needles to the South -- and as always some special treats planned! On Friday we will move South about 1-1/2 hours to the town of Gold Beach, and will shoot Cape Blanco and the Heads along the way. In Gold Beach, we will shoot the town, local beach and arch rocks.

We have reserved nice ocean-front, ocean-view rooms in each location for around $100/nt, and non-front/view rooms are available for less. Saturday after lunch, Guy and I will head to Crescent City, Ca and plan on shooting the Battery Point lighthouse at sunset, then enjoy a nice final dinner. (Optionally, we may decide to go further South to Garberville and shoot the giant redwoods along the famous "Avenue of the Giants" section of highway 101.) You are welcome to join us for this optional part at no additional cost, though there is no formal instruction planned, just shooting, eating and cocktails ;-).

Guy and I will head back to San Francisco early Sunday AM. Accessible airports will include, San Francisco, about 9-1/2 hours drive to Bandon Beach and 4 hours to Garberville. Portland is about 4 hours and Eugene or Medford are about 2 hours from Bandon Beach. This trip is all easy roads, so no off road vehicles necessary. All of the shooting locations we have scheduled are easy to get to and there are no hard hikes required. (Though there are some excellent optional viewing locations available for those so inclined.) Spouses and/or significant others are welcome to join, though we request they not participate in the actual workshop teaching sessions unless they are paid. As usual, we will plan on our normal (but optional) group meals for late breakfasts and dinner. Note that tides during this particular week are about as good as it gets for Fall and this is sure to be a spectacular workshop! Weather for this time if year is variable and can be anything from bright sun and clear skies to storms and fog all day long. The good news, is there are excellent shooting opportunities in any of those conditions!

Focus for this workshop will be a little more biased toward shooting and getting keeper images since there is so much opportunity at all times of day. The main instruction focus for this workshop will be targeted to composition, proper exposure, intermediate raw processing with C1 (plus basic to intermediate LightRoom instruction will be available alternatively for those that would prefer that), HDR blending tips, intro to focus blending using Helicon Focus if we have time and finally proper capture and processing techniques for stitching panoramas -- and yes, I want you all to actually shoot some panoramas this trip! For the panorama session we will cover both CS's Photomerge and Autopano Pro/Giga tools for assembly and blending.

This workshop is open to all camera types or brands, and appropriate for intermediate through advanced photographers. (And we spend enough time in each location for large format and tech camera shooters to be comfortable.)

Cost for this workshop is $1495 per person, and lodging, meals and transportation are not included. This workshop is limited to 12 participants total.

*We have already filled 10 of the slots for this workshop, so we only have 2 slots available at this time. IOW if you are interested in joining us, please act quickly -- and keep in mind we always have tons of fun on these workshops!

Reps: We have confirmed that Capture Integration will have reps present on this trip with lots of nice MF gear and tech cameras to demo! Dave Gallagher (the owner of Capture Integration) will be present as will CI's C1 and camera tech Guru Doug Peterson. Of course they will be bringing lots of fun gear for you to demo as well -- the short list is P40+, P45+ and P65+ backs along with a few Phase bodies, Cambo tech camera and an assortment of lenses for each!

We have also asked Leica rep Brad Weeks to be present with a selection of Leica gear to demo, but are waiting on official confirmation for this. Brad has been in the photo industry for 41 years and joined Leica in 1991. His territory covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

To register either PM or email Jack. Stay tuned for updates!

Re: Southern Oregon Coast Workshop, October 21st - 24th

Couple of testimonials

Dear Guy and Jack,

Just a quick note to let you know how much I apreciated your work in putting togeather our recent workshop. The best single word I can come up with is "growth". Perhaps overused but I believe that the balance you struck between shooting and processing, seeing and imageing really moved my work forward. Your work with the other participats was individualized... some us benifited from your experience with MF gear, and others from the clear guidelines and hands on assistance in post processing... you brought to the workshop. Oh about balance... did I mention that it was fun as well as being a photographically imersive experience. Up at 5:30A to capture the sweet light, processing the shots, debriefing and then low light work. Some of the participants were accompanied by there partners and I for one found that our group dinners were a simply delightful. One last thought. As a industry professional you were able to bring some insider knowledge to our discussions about developments in the field... all in all a great set of days. Simply excellent.

My work keeps growing and more opportunities for me have opened up. I do the occasional wedding, shoot for our local paper and have had, last year, a solo show. I'm working now in BW... and I have a collection togeather that I'm shopping around for a winter show. If you have a moment you can see some of my work at: www.rinconimages.com.

Based on the workshop we did in SJ last year I spent the next 4 months adding images to the collection and have a blurb book on San Juan and one consisting of heavily PS's ed images of El Convento.

Kindest regards,

Todd Davis

"The GetDPI workshops provide a great combination. You get hands-on time with Guy and Jack... and these two guys put a great deal of thought into where and what to shoot. The camaraderie of the small group is outstanding; so you learn from your fellow shooters as well. Plus, having access to the equipment and knowledge of important photo industry suppliers is a real plus. I enjoyed it thoroughly!"

Hope you have a great time on the Oregon coast. I went to college in Portland so have spent many a happy hour along those 400 or so miles of beautiful country.

Nancy and I just got back from two weeks in Berlin last night. I had some work there, so she came along and we both explored the city in depth. Took the M8 and 4 lenses... and then my old original charger died during the first week. Luckily, I also had my D-Lux 3 and shot that once my two M8 batteries finally gave out.

"I've been on a number of different workshops. Not only is the shooting with a great group of friends lots of fun, the composition and processing instruction has been instrumental in improving my photography. I love going to the same place with a group of people and then look at all of the different interpretations of the scenery and environment. Hey, where else will you get the peer pressure to get your butt out of bed for a sunrise shoot (especially when it is pitch black out or the temps are sub zero Moab LOL). I've been to Bandon before on a golf vacation with non photographers. What a magnificent area. Can't wait to revisit the coast. "

Terry

Dear Guy and Jack,
Shooting with you and Jack at the Moab- and N. Arizona workshop was a blast.
Not only did I get to try out techniques I don't often use but I got good critique as well.
Besides the shooting and the lab work, the evenings were great. There is nothing like chewing over any and all photo related topics with you guys.
Thanks again, and I will surely like to try to make the next one.

BTW we will also be teaching Lightroom/ACR for those that are in need of instructions for it. Bob Freund our LR genius will be taking on that task.

Little news flash . Mike Hatam and Jim Collum are trying (very hard) to get some time away from work and join us in Oregon . The whole GetDPI team will be together for this workshop. Nice time to celebrate GetDPI's 2 year Birthday. http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10737
