No, I think I got it right. If you maintain the focal length and increase the format size, DoF increases (for a given aperture). Permissible circle of confusion increases with format size and so you perceive the image to be sharper, including the transition between what appears sharp or soft in an image. (You can get there in terms of magnification as well.) Or did I say something different. Let me check.
