    I’m back (sort of)… with the Leica S 006!

Hi Dave, I hope you find more healing in photography or whatever you work on. Good to see you here! Ciao, Dave

The great tripod & head thread!

    So... it's a diaper.

The great tripod & head thread!

There was one discussed on the forum somewhere maybe back in this thread several pages, but I can't find it. Frankly, the best I've seen in the field is @jng 's solution: Just plop the computer into one of those tripod diapers. Setup is simple, although you do have to ensure you are not putting...

    Cube care and Lubrication

Thanks guys for reviving this thread. Especially the Industrial Disease quote, Rob! I've got some maintenance time on my cube coming up soon. Dave

Hasselblad X1D2 which Ratio to use

I found there are too many variables to know ahead of time; will you leave a white border around the image or not? If not, how big will that border be on each specific size? Any text along with the images? Because of the unknowns, I prefer 3x4 to start with because it is in the middle of the...

What Are You Using to Sharpen Images Now Days?

Well, you've quickly reached the limit of my understanding! I think technically you mean, "depending upon the deconvolution algorithm used by the software and the camera/model make?" My perceptions on capture sharpening, some of which may be completely wrong: The editing software you use to...

What Are You Using to Sharpen Images Now Days?

Dave, The anti-aliasing filter was one reason. According to Jeff Schewe, the Bayer deconvolution process is another. As of this March, he still recommends capture sharpening. Achromatic/ monochrome sensors might be the exception. Dave

What Are You Using to Sharpen Images Now Days?

I use C1 for capture sharpening, LR for creative/local sharpening and QImage One for print sharpening. For web images, I use LR std output sharpening for Screen. I've never felt like my images needed more than these basic tools. Dave

More on Diffraction - Why is it There?

Matt, This all dovetailing nicely for me; a week ago, I picked up a copy of Feynman's QED and I'm now half way through. I have little arrows drawn on sheets of paper strewn about everywhere! Dave

    Fuji's tour de force

I was in Patagonia in April with Michael Clark. He had the 500mm with him, although he and Justin Black always referred to it as "Snoopy." I assumed it was somewhere between 400-500mm, but didn't ask questions I knew they weren't allowed to answer. Here is his take on the lens he posted today...

The great tripod & head thread!

The Moutaineer is a larger tripod. It has three angle positions vs two, slightly larger tube diameters, taller (180 vs 165.5 cm) and a bigger “payload” (whatever that means) 20 vs 12 kg. The traveler is smaller and lighter Dave

Phase one body and back suggestion for products/portraits

I'm going to essentially repeat what Ben just said above. ^^^ Once you get to know the system you use, you will reach the point of it "disappearing" in your workflow. From there, the system you use will not be apparent to your clients. Personally, I would struggle doing product and architecture...

Help from anyone with an Alpa-Helvetar version of the 43xl - ANSWERED

Thanks Paul, I’m not worried about vignetting. I’ve tried the step-up ring with and without the adapter and there is no vignetting at least to 100mm image circle. I wouldn’t shift this lens more than that anyway. Dave

    Remounting lens in Copal

I don't remember if this was discussed in another thread or not, but Copal 0 shutters have an 0.5mm thread pitch. It's easy to calculate the shim thickness required once you figure out how many degrees of rotation you need for the best image. The formula is just 0.5mm x fraction of full...

Help from anyone with an Alpa-Helvetar version of the 43xl - ANSWERED

I purchased a non-Helvetar version of the 43xl in an Alpa mount. I'm wondering if someone with the Helvetar version could do a measurement for me: I need the total distance of the lens, from base of the Alpa mount to the end of the front threads with the lens helical rotated to infinity. Mine...

    Technical Camera Images

Thank you, Victor. They were about 10k in, so a total of about 11 miles both ways. The first one in Chile a little more, the one in Argentina a little less. Snow made the first one a little dicey coming back down. One of the three of us had no hiking poles, so we shared; it was turning to ice as...

    Technical Camera Images

Another great day was in El Chalten, hiking Sendero Fitz Roy. The colors that morning were from another world. I'm sure this image will evolve; it is one of those cases where I'm struggling to figure how far to tone down the colors since what we experienced looks beyond neon. The sky hues were...

    Technical Camera Images

I do the same thing. We lose a little close focus ability by extending the helical beyond infinity, but I'm happy with that trade off. Dave

A macro lens for the view camera

I think @jng uses the HB-Z 120 on his Cambo / IQ4150. But I don’t know how much of the image circle he uses. Dave
