Just retired… playing and working with cameras since 1968… on and off GetDpi a couple of times Over the years. Client with Capture Integration for a couple of decades. Curious about how to buy on the B&S area SAFELY. Any help there would be appreciated.

Hello!
If the seller accepts it, paypal gives you decent protection as a buyer. It’s what I have used here before. Buying from established members as well makes it hard to go wrong.

The protection may have to go both ways, it is important to mention, ie a well-known member may want a new member to pay via wire to make sure there's no "item not received" or "item not as declared" procedure initiated under Paypal.

That is while there are rogue sellers who may sell you orange juice in a box (which happened to me on eBay once) there are also buyers making unwarranted claims under buyer protection. There's also the B&S feedback section and you may ask a seller for references, too.

Lastly, there's the common sense aspect – ask questions if an offer seems to good to be true and check the background of the other side (seller and buyer).

What drevil says is true – well-known members are highly unlikely to engage in a scammy deal. Common sense shall guide you.
