Problem with Epson P800 front loading fine art paper

This morning I printed 5 sheets of ilford fine art textured silk paper without any problems (front loading) on page number 5 when loading it made a funny noise at the begging but loaded no problem. On page number 6 it wouldn't load, I can hear the rollers rolling but they wont grab the paper, I performed a roller clean with the built in maintenance software but still it wont feed the paper. The paper is 270 GSM so should be okay to top load it but in both photoshop and Epson Print layout if you dont choose front loading it wants to change the black ink to Photo instead of matt...........does anyone know a workaround for this so that I can use the matt ink?

My “solution” is that I use ImagePrint (Black) RIP to do all my printing and you can specify any feed you want for any paper, presuming the printer can physically handle it. It is an expensive solution, ImagePrint Red costs less but still not cheap. With Black you get profiles generated by the company, Colorbyte Software and it covers every possible paper, and if they don’t have the profile, they will generate new profiles for the paper of your choosing. I adopted ImagePrint for my workflow after foolishly buying the hardware and software to generate my own profiles—that was a costly mistake and ImagePrint Black, even at $895 for a 17” printer would’ve turned out to be a bargain had I only chosen it first.

All that being said, I understand paper manufacturer profiles are very, very good compared to the days when I was trying to make my own.

Perhaps a less expensive RIP (sorry, I wouldn't know what to recommend) might give you the ability to specify paper paths while using your current profiles.

That’s not an answer of question from ndwgolf ;-)

I can't tell him how to remedy the problem of the rollers no longer feeding his paper after he heard a funny noise trying to load paper that had previously fed 5 times. The front loader on my P800 is notoriously finicky and I will put paper through the ASF that Epson says I should put through the front loader. However, his problem of how to bypass his Epson Print Layout software to control his printer as he wishes has a solution, its a RIP and despite its steep cost comes with many more benefits than just specifying paper path and ink. I've heard of a RIP called Qimage that is much less expensive and that might do the trick also. I believe it also has a trial period. Imageprint has a trial version but it watermarks on the trial.

I often use Epson Print Layout with my P800 also and most of my prints are made on matte papers. In the EPL print dialog, as long as I have set the Media type to a matte paper (such as Velvet Fine Art or other matte papers) and set the Paper Source to Sheet, the printer has never incorrectly switched from Matte Black to Photo Black ink. Like you, I normally use the front manual feed for papers like Ilford Fine Art Textured Silk, but for 190 gsm Moab Entrada Rag paper (which is also a fine art matte paper) I use the sheet feeder and set the Media type to Ultra Premium Presentation Matte (per Moab recommendations). I just ran a test print using EPL and verified that it used the Matte black ink while feeding the paper through the top Sheet feed.

Agree 100%. I don't use Epson printers anymore, but with my Canon printer, I avoid all sorts of problems by printing from Canon's (free) printing software. As far as I understand, Epson's software work in a similar way, and gives you full control over paper types, ICC profiles, margins etc.

Problem solved. After going to the Epson service centre here in phuket one of the lads working there noticed that the paper was hanging on the rear hatch. He got me to feed the paper manually until it passed the bottom of the rear hatch then let the printer finish loading the paper. It works a treat now.
