Tacheles was the meeting place of the alternative art scene in Berlin Mitte for more than 20 years. Artists had occupied the remains of the former Friedrichsstadtpassage in early 1990 and later rented it.
Partly, the complex housed around 80 studios, exhibition and rehearsal rooms, a cinema and gastronomy. In 2008, the lease expired and negotiations for a new one failed. After protests, the Tacheles building was vacated about ten years ago on September 4, 2012.
The open space behind the Kunsthaus could still be used until 2013. The photos are mostly from the closing party of the Tacheles in 2013. Today, an office, retail and residential building is being built on the Tacheles site. Exclusive living and working replaces alternative culture.
The Tacheles
Creative work...
... without much commercial pressure
The phoenix from the ashes remained a dream
Closing party on the open-air site
Es bleibt die Erinnerung...
... to a typical end, ...
... even if one still resisted so.
The frame was blown up, ...
... the art moved on.
As always, looking back, ...
... one must endure the contradictions.
One expects the coming ...
... with great calmness.
Alle the best, Uli
