Wow, thread from the dead. :) In the time interval since I last posted in this thread, I tried HF with some macro shots. This one ended up being a 28MB JPEG(24.6MP) at 100% quality:



HF also allows you to generate a 3D map so you can see the planes of focus to determine whether you used even steps:
