Just tried the GFX100 II again and LV is now working fine (camera in USB tether fixed mode). Using the P1 usb C cable. By the way, does anyone know how to rotate the LV display in mobile? That is without going into the back menu to change orientation,

I use C1 mobile solely as a focus aid for digital backs - because I can't focus the backs critically using their screens when in the field. Mobile on the IPAD, with all its hiccups, is the first practical solution I have found for my IQ4 150. Don't need mobile for the GFX really, because that camera has a good EVF. Nice to see it working, though.

The real solution is for P1 to provide a convenient external focus interface. Given this is pro gear it could be proprietary, something like the Fuji EVF-TL1. I would pay for that.

I seem to remember someone trying out the Apple Glass thingie with their Canon. Wonder whether C1 mobile would run with it. BIg complex gadget and probably more trouble than it's worth - but a dedicated head mounted display would be great. Don't really need any other functions - just screen mirroring for the back. Ideally there would be some sort of button replication as well, but I could live with just the display. Simple and reliable is so much more important than features.

"Every way superior"? hmm.

Another bulky gizmo to have to pay for with a locking plug that's so handy to pull over tripod and camera with by accident...
I prefer WiFi tethering for working settings and capture, and local storage on the camera, not the iPad or iPhone.

But that's me. And I only rarely use tethering at all, because I find it clumsy and inconvenient in almost all cases other than tabletop and macro work.

Well I mentioned a couple ways it is superior that you missed - practically no cable length limits and the ability for charging via an external battery that keeps the iPad running all day long. I’d be ok with amending that to “many ways superior”.

Yes I’m with you to some degree about locking tethers. Downside is yank it and everything may tumble. On the other hand, it produces a more secure connection for tethering. And if you’re working on set all day with clients, the last thing you want is connection issues.

As for “bulky gizmo” (?), an ethernet cable doesn’t need a separate gizmo to lock. It’s been part of their connector for decades.

Wifi is great, unless you’re using C1 Mobile, which doesn’t communicate a live preview signal very efficiently, so an ethernet tether solves that issue. Since I presume you are using Phocus Mobile, you would not necessarilly have been aware of that.

I use ethernet with my IQ4 and it works well enough on the iPads. At home I use USB-C, but have thought about just running an ethernet cable from my stand to the switch where the laptop sits.

For the filed I use these skinny braided cables, they take very little space and are super flexible:

I am tempted to order one off these badboys and do without the dongle. I don't use the iPad for hours non-stop, so I don't think I will run out of battery.

Brad says you plug it in, select your camera, and it works.

He uses it on every shoot. Not for editing, but just for tethering into an iPad instead of a laptop.

That would be great then if there was a way to have it automatically select a camera: plugging in the USBc cable just connects, never anything to worry about. I've used various cameras and the IQ4-150 has been the most reliable making a connection. I really want it to work as very often on location (especially in busy public spaces) a laptop, camera case, and camera on tripod (and usually a backpack with extra bits and pieces) is just a little bit too much stuff to keep an eye on — most of the time I don't have an assistant. Still with no sessions it's a moot point anyway.
