Fun with MF images 2025

Last week I received some Copal-0 shims from Misumi and was at last able to check that I had the inter-cell spacing on my S-K Digitar 47mm optimally set up for use on my GFX/F-Universalis. Here's a test shot from the hill-tops at the south end of Lyttleton Harbour looking back towards the port - 2x images flat stitched with +/- 10mm of shift. I'm very happy with the performance of this little gem...

Beautiful shot, John.

How do you find the modified lens’ pur performance versus the ULD 50mm?

Thanks Doppler9000.

It's taken a bit of work to get the Digitar 47 performing at its best, involving lots of test shots with various combinations of shims under the front cell, but its been worthwhile persisting with. For a start its more than 1kg lighter than the ULD 50mm, and that makes it a far more practical proposition on a relatively lightly built technical camera such as the F-Universalis.

Its FFD is obviously shorter than the ULD 50mm, and initially when I was using the A-S Rotafoot as a rear mount for the camera that restricted movements, as the rear element was sitting within the lens mount - shifts of only 7-8 mm were possible. However, I recently bought a magnetic connector plate, which in combination with an L-Bracket, gives me about another 5mm of space, allowing unlimited shifts.

My impression is that for an unshifted image at or close to infinity its sharpness is ahead of the ULD 50mm. My initial tests indicated that shifts of 10-12mm were very useable, with a graceful decline from there out to 20mm. However, I've since discovered that it has some residual curvature of the focus plane away from the camera at the edges. As a consequence, images focused at closer distances can deliver great results right out to the edge of an image with 20mm of shift. I posted one such image earlier in this thread. Tilt is fine for normal landscape use, but is a bit limited by the mechanics if one wants to do a more extreme near-far setup.

So overall, I'm very happy - so much so that my 50mm ULD is up for sale.
