Photographing Wild Horses help please!

My oldest daughter wants me to take her someplace to photograph wild horses and I don't really know where to start on this. Do we need to do this as a part of a workshop? If so, is there anyone someone might be able to recommend? Is there a certain time of year and location that is best?
Thanks in advance,
Greg

Greg,
A trip to North Carolina OuterBanks would give you an opportunity to photograph wild horses in a beach/seaside setting. Plus add in Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Pea Island NWR, lighthouses, Kitty Hawk/Wright Brothers memorial, Alligator River NWR... A lot of bang for the buck in one relatively small area.

Also some a little further south down the coast in North Carolina at Shackleford Banks

Cumberland Island off the Georgia coast is a national seashore where there are wild horses:

You can go for day trips or camp, or there's a hotel you can stay in as well (Greyfield Inn).

My only advice is to shoot for the colder months because of the bugs...

Thank you for both the location and the bug tip!

There are a bunch of places where wild herds can be found. i know of herds in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and the Dakotas. I've photographed the herd near Cold Creek, NV when I was at Nellis. It was an easy herd to find because they're usually close to the road with the bonus of the road being good also.

Check out drewdoggett.com to see some beautiful work with wild horses on Sable Island. The work with white horses in Iceland is also beautiful but I would bet against those horses being wild. The photographs appear staged, though very effectively.
