I once was creatively in charge of all Lincoln advertising ... I would have loved to have had this image to use.
Oh, wow, that is quite a compliment and I appreciate it very much. :)

There is quite a story behind this particular car, and it’s been a part of our family since it was new. I have been researching all Lincoln cars for most of the last year and this year is the Centennial of the Lincoln Motor Company, so I thought a little holiday spirit was in order!

It is rare to receive such a kindness regarding a post, so thank you for making my morning so much better. We should have some long discussions about your work! I would be very interested to know more about your past association with Lincoln and advertising in general.:):):)

How nice of you to reply with such interest.

I was born and raised in Detroit Michigan, and demonstrated artistic abilities quite young ... so art was my "in" to the advertising world. I was recruited to be a group creative director at the Young & Rubicam ad agency after winning best-of-show with an ad campaign for brake linings over ALL the fancy, expensive car advertising. The Detroit News called it David slays Goliath in a giant headline ... LOL!

Eventually, I became Executive Creative Creative Director of Y&R's Detroit office and among other clients, oversaw all Lincoln and Mercury TV ads, magazine ads, dealer group retail TV and all catalogs ... Zillion$ of dollars in photography alone. We once did a historical based campaign after I visited the Edsel and Eleanor Ford mansion and discovered some of the history of certain vehicles. I had the good fortune to launch Lincoln into the modern era with the Lincoln Mark-VIII. I also was in charge of Ford's corporate advertising for a number of years.

I'm long retired now.

Fascinating… thank you for sharing some discussions of your work and achievements. :) Growing up over the years, my only glimpse into the advertising and marketing world of automobile manufacturers was basically being a consumer enthralled by magazine articles, ads and photographs. Brochures were always read and re-read until the car of interest was actually purchased or eventually forgotten for one reason or another.

I can only imagine how immensely satisfying such a creative position was for you over the years. You have an inspiring story, and your sharing it is greatly appreciated.:) I have so many questions about those times when I was much younger and interested in cars much more than now. Exciting times!

It is really a great thing being part of such an important part of corporate life. Much more interesting than my own banal story!

That said, I have just started a small project in automotive abstracts… initially hood ornaments. Alas, I am slowly getting underway with that endeavor partly because of Covid issues and medical issues here. Hopefully I will post results as this project moves along…

Lots of hot lights and 4X5 film back in those days. That was a grand era of car photography. You're very fortunate to have been a part of it, clearly you deserved to be there.

Thanks for sharing your background.
I actually started out as an apprentice in one of the big Art studios that serviced the automotive ad agencies in the 1960s. It was a time when car ads and catalogs were also done by illustrators. It was a complex creative process involving so many specialists that it would boggle your mind. Eventually, photography overtook it and massive photo studios were born. Walter Farynk headed up GM photographic and was one of the inspirational leaders of the photo movement. 4X5 and 8X10 tilt-shift ruled, most places had their own labs on site. Many of those photographers became famous among the car community and were very wealthy ... it was a heady time.

There are a few of us old timers who recall it all ... one top photographer from then is trying to preserve the history ... last year I was invited to a gathering that included many creatives from that era. Wonderful stories.

Today, I shoot some automotive related work to help pay for the Leica habit. Mostly donkey work for cash. I also do digital retouching of major images shot by GM's ad and promotional agencies ... those harken back to the heyday ... most are 100+ meg shots from Phase One, Hasselblad or Fuji cameras. Really nice stuff.
